Hi, dear Virgos. I should be grateful if you would answer two questions: what gifts do you prefer to get and what gifts do you hate? I need this info for article. Thank you.
The simplest way to answer for me is, if it's a useful gift, I LOVE it. If it's not useful I dislike it. Useful can mean a variety of things, but I dislike most frivolous gifts. I do enjoy things like flowers and candy, but not stuffed animals or cutesy little things I don't know what to do with and end up giving away or tossing. Some of the best gifts I've gotten are furniture, vacuums, and things like that. Maybe I'm not the norm, but that's my answer. :)
I prefer practical gifts - things that are fun that I might not buy or make for myself that are useful. Handmade things are awesome and original. Trivial, cutesy, or girly gifts I detest! Thanks for asking. I'd be interested to read the article when you're finished with it.
Well, I'm not picky but....I don't like gifts I totally didn't ask for?
You know?
Why ask if you have a list of stuff you want or need if you're not going to actually go by the list and get what was requested?
Makes NO logical sense to me at all.
For years I've asked for gift certs to Jiffy Lube or a magazine subscription that I like and never have recieved them. Oh sure, I got a subscription to a magazine that wasn't what I requested....*sigh*
So, over the past 5 years. I tell them to send me money so I can buy what I need or want.....because I know THEY won't! LOL
I love gifts that come from the heart, not necessarily made of material. I would actually rather not receive material gifts. I have my own sense of style and taste and I like picking out things myself. Honored gifts to me are: some time alone with my husband, a kind word, thoughtful conversation, a walk in the woods... playing a game of catch (I love playing catch!). Stuff like that.
I think hand made gifts or gifts from the heart are wonderful. Also something useful. I don't mind flowers but I would rather a plant. I usually give my friends a category of what I like and let them go wild. Like I love anything to do with suns, moons and star. If it's something like books or music I tell them the authors or musicians that I'm into and let them go from there. I'm really not all that picky and my friends are pretty good about not taking any offense if you don't like what they picked out.
Practical gifts, anything electronic (laptop, palm pilots, calculators with all kinds of neat options, electronic address keepers) and anything that shows the other person "knows" me. Two of the best gifts I ever received; 1) a full day at a spa which included a mineral soak in a softly dimmed room, oil massage, face mask, pedicure, manicure, hair, etc. It was awesome! Never felt so pampered (which all Virgos secretly want!) and the second was a surprise trip across to Seattle in a friend's houseboat with a candlelit dinner planned. Very romantic but not mushy or over the top. Dislike ready-made smoochie cards, would prefer a blank card with a thoughtful picture on the outside and a person's OWN words inside! Hope this helps! Would love to read the article too!
I'm also a practical gift loving person :) but I also like random things especially if I collect them, such as diecast cars, candles, hello kitty stuff. I hate getting things I obviously won't use and the gift will sit there taking up space (clutter drives me insane!). Electronics are cool, CDs, food (must be my Taurus aspects coming through there haha), gift certificates, notebooks (i write a lot). So yeah, useful things unless it goes with a collection I've kept up with :)
I like to get gifts I can use or gifts of things I always want but never want to/have the $ to buy (ie. books, art, pampering products, art, art supplies)
Gifts I like are.. books, electronics, things I specifically ask for. Stuff like that.
All too often my aunts buy me like.. jewerly boxes and weird watches and makeup/perfume sets, and I hate them all. I really don't like it when other people buy me makeup and perfume-y things, I'd rather buy those things myself..
I love hand-made things, useful things - especially anything electronic, and I really like getting gift cards (it's the guilt-free expenditure of money and getting to pick what I want for myself).
I detest balloons. They are the most useless and annoying gift ever! Flowers at least smell good and can be used to decorate a room. Balloons just get in the way!
I don't like getting flowers cause... well, I don't like flowers. I like stuffed animals but only if they're big so I can sleep with them. I like useful things, like computer programs, gift cards, and my all-time favorite, Money. I like getting money because there's nowhere you can go wrong with that, and sure it isn't a very sentimental gift, but that's what the card is for. I don't think spending money on a shirt or a book is sentimental either, so money will do. =)
I dislike getting things like Bath baskets or makeup kits. They just seem so... unthoughtful. I prefer something that was picked with me inthought. I have a collection that I love to get stuff for, or things that I can use in everyday life. I love books and sometimes gift cards or cash. Handmade cards are probably one of my favorites. Fun toys that are inside jokes. I think really, as long as its personal I really enjoy it.
I prefer getting stuff I want/need. I don't want stuff I don't want.. Liek nic-naks - how much more useless can ya get? Especially when I hate to dust
My want list varies.. could be new sheets, but it could be bath products - but it's stuff I want/need.. gift certificates fer the places I shop are the best!
Well, my answers are a bit tainted since I read the previous responses first, and I'm a bit late since I only just saw this post, but...
A gift that is practical "scores more points" than one that is not, but I don't let that be the deciding factor. It's more important to me that it's something that I ask for. An unfortunate side effect of this is that my relatives rarely ask me what I want and just give me money (or in the case of two, Best Buy gift cards, because they know I'll always use those.) Practical can be bad in the case of my grandmother that always gives us sweatshirts - I rarely wear more than shorts and t-shirt, even in -5 F and a foot of snow, deordorant - I'm lucky to use a stick in two years because I ACUTALLY SHOWER WHEN I NEED TO, and cologne - I have quite the collection of brands that are no longer for sale, though.
Of course, I also ask for things that are not practical or rational requests in any way - the house that my parents bought when they first got married and sold when I was 12 (they divorced when I was 5 or so), or money to go to college with (I get most of that from the government, now.)
My youngest sister has the ability to buy the least practical gifts of things that I actually like, though. Usually every Christmas she'll get me some kind of head or skull - I have a petrified alligator head, a ceramic cow skull, and a clay tiger head ash tray/candy dish/thing, she's also gotten things like GWAR and Metallica videos, a thumb wrestling ring, or sometimes art supplies (even though I draw as little as she does anymore - long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away, we were both good at it.)
Probably the only time that I'm ever actually bothered by a bad choice (have to give some, if a small amount, of credit for trying) is when I get the same gift from multiple people for the same occasion. Getting a Laser Tag gun set and target vest from each parent for Christmas is a good thing, getting three copies of the same New Kids On The Block cassette is not. :)
Doh, a few other late replies reminded me of another thing...
People always complain that I'm hard to shop for, but people with collections of anything are ALWAYS easy to shop for (not just Virgos!) Getting something a truly avid collector doesn't have is tough, but when they know I collect just about any sort of pro wrestling stuff (although about the only thing to buy anymore are the figures, and those all suck now), and also mostly anything related to Japanese pop music (which is not that tough to find, but no one has ever given me anything related to that.)
I'm at an advantage this year... there isn't much that I want. There are certain things I say I will only ask for if there is nothing else I want, and I always have to be honest with myself about that. A few years ago, I was completely and entirely sure I would get to use my "bad" requests, but then a few weeks before Thanksgiving (when everyone begins to badger you for a list), I saw a digital guitar processor on a website and decided I wanted that. This year I'm all set for both my birthday and Christmas, because there is only one thing I want, and it is too expensive in combination, and worthless without a complete set - hockey skates and pads and random gear. Only my mother could afford that, and she wouldn't want me to start playing hockey (she didn't want me to start playing football for the year that I did, I guess baseball and soccer and wrestling were safe, though, she never complained about that.) So I'm all set for asking for college money (I've gotten a little help, but not even 2% compared to the total cost so far) or the house - neither of which I have been able to bring myself to ask for. :)
I always love to get gifts that show that someone has put some thought into it. A picture of a friend and I when we were young in a frame, a letter from a loved one letting me know they are thinking about me, things like that.
I've gotten two gifts that I really treasure. One was from a very close friend in High school and it was a cd burnt with songs that made him think of me. He included lyrics and a letter letting me know the signifigance of each song and why he picked it. The other was a stuff hippo that sang "Fat Bottom Girls" from my Mom at Christmas. I was out of the country for Christmas and before I left in November she had heard me singing that old song "I want a hippopotomus for Christmas" in JUNE. She had remembered me singing that and bought it three months before I left, only to ship it to me while I was away.
I hate getting gifts that aren't thought out at all. Gift cards are nice and all if I need to do some shopping but they are so impersonal. Get me a card with a little note inside and I'm pleased.
